Thought of the Day from Wendy Barker
We have so many creative and caring people in our midst, helping us to stay connected and hope-filled and centred on what really matters in life.
Doris Dixon called me the other day to offer some of her collected favourite writings, for possible inclusion in a “Thought for the Day”. One lovely piece she selected was from song words written by Alison Harding for the dedication of our Memorial Gardens. Set to the tune of “Spirit of Gentleness”. Its timely fourth verse and chorus read as:
“Please give us the courage to trust in your grace,
To sustain us in days when we can’t see your face.
Let our spirits join with you when we feel so alone,
Let our spirits soar upwards until we are home.
Memories, stay with us, pray with us,
Fill us with comfort and joy from the heart.
Memories, stay with us, pray with us.
Hold out your hand as we drift, drift far apart.”
I have a beautiful sustaining memory of both Doris and Alison, and many others, singing joyfully in the choir at the front of our church. Such sharing of talents makes a significant impression in the moment, but also gives us much to look back on as foundational supports for our ongoing hope and faith.
Prayer
Creator God,
We thank you for the many talents of those around us,
Reminding us that you have indeed created us in your image
With the potential to be creative in so many ways ourselves.
Help us to use the special gifts that you have given us to bring your love and hope where it is needed.
Amen
