The Coldest Night of the Year is an annual walk event across Canada Families, individuals, and friends create teams to fundraise for a charity close to their heart and walk a 2 to 5 km route. February 20th, is the designated date for 2021.
In the past years, the Salvation Army has co-ordinated the Coldest Night of the Year Event in Powell River but COVID changes everything and no walk is scheduled. The Powell River United Church is planning a Virtual Walk instead.
Everyone is encouraged to walk. Walk around your apartment, walk around the block, go for a hike, you just have to move. Captain Sir Tom Moore was 100 years old and he raised millions walking at his senior residence with his walker. Maybe PRUC can raise a few bucks for our own Salvation Army to help them with their on going programs. ( Community Luncheons, Mobile Outreach, etc, )
What will our Coldest Night of the Year Look Like?
The PRUC’s Coldest Night of the Year event will take on the appearance of a Virtual Walk-A-Thon.
The goal is to see how many kms we can do all together, Can we make it from Saltery Bay to Lund and back? (110km.)
When will it happen?
The walk-a ton will take place over 2 weeks February 14 to February 28.
How do I participate ?
Individuals or safe bubble groups are encouraged to set a goal ie so many steps/ day or so many km. / day.
Hint: Approximately, 1300 steps = 1km. or use a pedometer or figure out how long it takes you to walk a km and time yourself. THIS DOES NOT HAVE TO BE EXACT.
Progress will be in Thursday’s News Letter so contact Marilynn Davis by email mhdaivis1986@gmail.com or phone 604 487 9543 Wednesdays, February 16 & 24 with your numbers.
How is money raised?
People can donate a set amount or they can collect pledges for the distance walked ie. $.00/ km (see the pledge sheet attached.)
Each person will be responsible for collecting the money for their pledges.
Cheques can be made out to Powell River United Church Attention: Coldest Night and mailed to the church office or contact Marilynn Davis to make other arrangements
