Devotional Message of the Day from Rev. Mary White
I NEED THREE VOLUNTEERS:
YOU, YOU, AND YOU
All those who were enrolled… qualified to do the work of service…
– Numbers 4:46–47
For community to survive and come to a place of health, all who are able must carry responsibility for the community. Each person must play a part in assuring the welfare of the community and of every individual member of the community.
Most of us are members of several communities at any given moment of our lives. We live in geographic and political communities. We live in faith communities. We live in families and volunteer groups and associations. We know communities in our workplaces and where we gather for recreation and renewal. Sometimes it is hard to balance our commitments in these varied communities.
Community—healthy community—is intentional. It requires organization, formal and informal, that defines the areas of responsibility carried by all and also by each community member. Any community we are part of is either being built and renewed, or it finds itself in a state of disorganization and disintegration. Community is defined by purpose and maintained by each member consciously choosing that which brings life to the community and sets it upon new paths of service.
Reflective Questions
Identify a new area of service that the Spirit is calling you to give attention to. Prayerfully consider how that is likely to take shape in the days ahead.
What is the glue for our faith community today?
