Daily Devotional Message from Rev. Mary White
“I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any
longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing.…”
– Jeremiah 23:4
NO MORE MISSING PERSONS
An amazing promise is incorporated into the prophet’s declaration when he says, “Nor shall any be missing.” It seems that every generation posts its own sad list of the missing. They are the victims of holocaust and ethnic cleansing, the protesters who have stood up to tyranny, the child soldiers of the conflicts that tear countries apart and fragment ancient communities. They are Canada’s women and children and First Nations people who disappear along lonely stretches of highway. They are the victims of poverty and disease, homelessness and hunger. They are the disappeared, the nameless, the faceless millions who do not matter enough to be more than a passing blip on a prosperous world’s radar screen. They are the powerless whose votes do not need to be counted, feared, or anticipated. Generation after generation they are numbered among the least important of those Jesus refers to as brothers and sisters.
Through the noise of conflicting messages and the lure of today’s temptations, another voice must be heard—a voice that whispers a promise to all who might hear, “And none shall be listed as missing.”
Reflective Questions
When was the last time you had a meal with a friend?
Why not invite someone online or use your phone to share a meal with you—someone you have not seen as part of your circle, whom you and others might easily overlook or forget.
