Remaining Faithful • Something to Ponder by Rev. Mary White
Technology is moving us into the future and creating new ways of experiencing the world on an exponential level. We as parents and guardians are sometimes at a loss as to how to handle the speed at which the traditional ways of society are shifting. I wonder what messages of hope we can offer younger generations who are visualizing a future that seems somewhat murky. We no longer have the relevant answers that our elders had for us. So maybe this is an appropriate time to non-judgementally listen to the concepts that the younger generation is manifesting for their future.
Stay safe. Stay connected.

Boldly Going Where the Wisest Have Gone Before
We have had to give up a lot over the past couple thousand years, from thinking we and our earth were the centre of the “universe, to thinking we and our earth were at least the centre of our solar system, to thinking our solar system was at the centre of our galaxy, to thinking our galaxy was the only thing like itself in the universe, to as recently as 1998 discovering that not only were we previously wrong about all of this, but the forms of matter and energy we thought we knew and had been exploring aren’t even the dominant forms of energy in the universe. One would think that by now the only thing of which we’d be certain is that, at any moment, what we think we understand can be proven obsolete, incomplete, or flat-out wrong.
This logic notwithstanding, we are goaded through our politics, our religion, and the media into believing that changeability is evidence of some fundamental flaw. So, we become tempted to try to hold on to our interpretations of the biblical narrative exactly the way they were given to us, even when those interpretations no longer make sense. However, if life is fundamentally changeable, then it stands to reason that we must be adaptable in order to continue to relate to it effectively. If we’re playing tennis on a court that keeps shifting and we don’t continually reorient ourselves to where the net has moved, pretty soon we’ll be serving into the stands.
Prayer
God, grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Amen
