Message from Our Light of God Ministry • Reverend Mary White
‘Know thyself’ wisely said by Socrates so many hundreds of years ago. But I believe that we can only know ourselves in the present. Hindsight tells us that we go through life changes and choices that may alter our mindset. In knowing our self, we need to be aware that we may be restricting our thinking to the point of overlooking possibilities that can expand our life experiences. “It is always done this way” or “this is who I am” are attitudes that leave us unable to fully embrace our spirit. We become stuck in a rut of a monotonous existence. We are born into playfulness that beckons us to explore our world with an open mind, heart, and spirit. Letting go is not always easy but if we are to enjoy and live our lives fully, then we must let go of all that glues us to the non-essentials.

Reading: Self-Knowledge, excerpt from “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran
17. SELF-KNOWLEDGE
And a man said, Speak to us of Self-Knowledge. And he answered, saying: Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights. But your ears thirst for the sound of your heart’s knowledge. You would know in words that which you have always known in thought. You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams. And it is well you should. The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea; And the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes. But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure; And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line. For self is a sea boundless and measureless. Say not, ‘I have found the truth,’ but rather, ‘I have found a truth.’ Say not, ‘I have found the path of the soul.’ Say rather, ‘I have met the soul walking upon my path.’ For the soul walks upon all paths. The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed. The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.

Desire by itself is not wrong. It is life itself, the urge to grow in knowledge and experience.
It is the choices you make that are wrong. To imagine that some little thing — food, sex, power, fame — will make you happy is to deceive yourself.
Only something as vast and deep as your real Self can make you truly and lastingly happy.
Live your life intelligently with the interests of your deepest Self always in mind.
After all, what do you really want?
Not perfection; you are already perfect. What you seek is to express in action what you are.

Poem: You Wonder from “My Soul Feels Lean” by Joyce Rupp
You wonder why you take those daily steps, pushing to get your work done, to conform to a schedule beyond accomplishment.
You wonder when you end each day with the discomfort of not making the mark, leaving much undone, unsaid, unloved, unresolved.
You wonder how you could miss those moments of friendship, those invitations to compassion, those connections to a world not of your making.
You wonder if you could live life differently, more in tune with your true self, more in step with your deepest desires, more in love with cosmic beauty, more in sync with the world’s desolate.
You wonder, but then you continue forward on the same old trek of dull repetition, karmic garbage, and sludgy unawareness.

Life Giving Spirit
As you blow your wisdom through us, may we open our hearts to a deeper more considerate understanding of self. May we let go of self-denial which comes from material influences. Let us not substitute our true selves for facsimiles that veils who we are designed to be. May we trust our intuitions, over-ride our self-doubts and embrace the joy in expressing who we really are. As we look inward with wonder and awe, may we see more of what is possible beyond the scope of our eyes. We pray in the name of Love.
Amen
