Discernment

Devotional Message of the Day from Rev. Mary White

Do you think that I have come  to bring peace to the earth?

– Luke 12:51

FIRE WILL NOT BURN US OUT

Facing difficulties is a part of life. Our life is dynamic in that there is constant motion and constant change. Like the moon, the cycle of our faith journey waxes and wanes. Like the fire, the call to Christian leadership sparkles and is blown out. Like a tree, the commitment to Christian discipleship digs in and is uprooted. In the midst of all these changes and movements, our bodies as individuals and as communities wear out and our souls become distressed. However, we are comforted by Jesus’ uncomfortable message that there is a reconciliation, like the action of a fire being rekindled (Luke 12:49).

Lent is a journey of discerning who and whose we are. Such discernment can make our soul soar. Such discernment may also burn a community into ashes. But such discernment will not burn God’s people out. Instead, it sustains and nurtures our life into new joy, health, and wholeness. It is like lightning that sets an old forest on fire and births abundant new flora and fauna for all.
