Spiritual Maturity

Message from Our Minister Reverend Mary White

We tend to overlook the fact that we are very much a part of nature. Humans have their own ecosystems which often invade other species ecosystems. Living in harmony with and compassion for all life begins with finding synchronization within the self. Spending time in silence, overriding our egos, opening our minds to appreciating all life as having value, accepting diversities in our own species and others, going for meditative walks in nature are only a few ways of finding harmony and compassion so that life is more of a spiritual experience and survival for all.

Dear Friends:

This week the videos are talking about feelings. It is so important for us as adults to encourage our children and youth to express their feelings. Often our young people pick up on things going on in the world around them and can carry worries and concerns without us even knowing it.

The Parent-Tot video has the reading of two books: one about feelings and one about being thankful for various types of weather. The songs this week are: The More We Sing Together; ‎It's A Happy Day; If You're Happy and You Know It; and Thank You God.

The Family Fun video has the reading of a book called "Happy"‎ by Pharrel Williams, the RAP artist. The songs are: Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow; This is the Day that God Has Made; Abilene; Feelin' Groovy; and Don't Worry Be Happy.

Perhaps these books and songs can provide a starting place for more discussions in your home about feelings.

Sincerely,

Brenda Pielle

from Henri J. M. Nouwen, “The Inner Voice of Love

There is within you a lamb and a lion. Spiritual maturity is the ability to let lamb and lion lie down together. Your lion is your adult, aggressive self. It is your initiative-taking and decision-making self. But there is also your fearful, vulnerable lamb, the part of you that needs affection, support, affirmation, and nurturing. When you heed only your lion, you will find yourself overextended and exhausted. When you take notice only of your lamb, you will easily become a victim of your need for other people’s attention. The art of spiritual living is to fully claim both your lion and your lamb. Then you can act assertively without denying your own needs. And you can ask for affection and care without betraying your talent to offer leadership.

Poem: Earth Compassion

from Norman Habel, “Rainbow of Mysteries”

Many who explore the evolution of my mother Earth tend to see a battleground, the survival of the fiercest in a dog-eat-dog world.

My sympathy is with those new scientists who discern the survival of the caring, the web of compassion that creates community and integrates ecosystems.

Can I trust their views?

And Earth, some would argue, is part of that community communicating concern from species to species and from the depths to the heights.

Can I discern such a mystery?....

P R A Y E R

May the compassion of the cosmos, and the empathy of Earth, stir within you a consciousness of a spiritual force in nature that shares pain, heals hearts, and nurtures hope. May the kingdom of peace begin with your lion and your lamb freely and fearlessly lying down together.

Amen
