Flow Through Me

Message from Light of God Ministry • Reverend Mary White

Since 1962 the Faith Community at Powell River United Church had been blessed with The United Church Women (UCW). This was an amalgamation of the Woman’s Missionary Society and the Woman’s Association. Serving as the foundation that held the community together, we now must bid this faithful organization adieu.

Closures such as this are happening across the country. Young women do not have time for the demands of such organizations. They have jobs and families in their care and organizations such as the UCW are time challenging. With members aging and no new members, the Powell River United Church UCW are disbanding and there will be a special worship service Sunday September 25th at 11:00am honouring their many years of Serving with Love. This is a sad time for all.

With Love,
Rev. Mary

All Are Welcome With Love • In-person Worship Sundays at 11am

Dear Friends:

The fall is upon us and we have the pleasure of enjoying beautiful colours as the leaves turn and the sun casts a different glow at this time of year. The cooler evenings are a welcomed reprieve from the summer heat. I hope you are enjoying the start of this new season.

This week the Family Fun video includes a story about a friendship between a sled dog and a polar bear as well as these songs: This is the Day, Kum by Ya, Peace Like a River, and Magic Penny.

The Parent tot video has these songs: Welcome Everyone, God Made Me, If You're Happy and You Know It, The B-I-B-L-E, and The More We Sing Together as well as a story about happiness.

I hope these videos bring some smiles to the faces in your home.

Reading from 365 Tao by Ming-Dao Deng • Excerpt titled: Cooperation

When we become involved with a fellowship, we must gradually become an integral, organic part of that organization. The relationship will be one of mutual influence: We must carefully influence the collective, and in turn, we will be shaped by the company we keep. Influencing others requires perception. We need to know when to act, when to be passive, when others are receptive to us, and when they will not listen. This takes experience, of course, and it is necessary to take part in a great many relationships—from our families to community associations—to cultivate the proper sensitivity. In time, there will be moments of both frustration and success, but in either case, a certain tenacity is crucial. If we are thwarted in our initiatives, then we must persevere by either maintaining our position or changing it if a better one prevails. If we are successful, we must not rely on charisma alone, but we must also work to fully realize what the group has resolved to do.

The Monday Night Pasta Team has Retired.

We as a Congregation (including the Nav. Team), would like to offer our tremendous gratitude and deep thanks to the hundreds of people who helped make this community service happen over the past 20 years.

Thousands of meals were lovingly prepared and served. Countless hours of loving service went into cutting vegetables for the tomato sauce, cooking the spaghetti, preparing the garlic toast, salad and beverages. There were others who did the shopping, who selflessly served, did the dishes and cleaned up. It is all very much appreciated, and was a wonderful service the PRUC offered to our community.

Yes, Monday Pasta Suppers as we know them have come to an end, but there are plans to continue with another food service that may look quite different in the near future. We’ll keep you posted!

POEM Excerpt from “Acorns and Archangels”

Ruth Burgess Edition • God Sends Us Out

God sends us out into the world – not to build walls but to dismantle barriers. Not to load on chains but to liberate the oppressed. Not to close our doors but to welcome in the stranger. Not to further fragment the body of Christ but to re-imagine it. God sends us out into the world to live as a sign of the justice and peace of his kin-dom.

PRAYER

From The Book of a Thousand Prayers

O Christ, you lived and breathed everything that matters.

Whatever the Spirit that was in you, let it be in me as well.

Whatever the energy that healed those who came into contact with you, let it flow through me as well.

Fill me with the vision, the tenderness and the passion that filled you.

And so be it.
