From “Little Pieces of Light: Darkness and Personal Growth” by Joyce Rupp
When darkness evolves into despair or depression and thoughts of suicide surface, all hope of a divine being lifting the burden of darkness disappears. Prayer eventually becomes less a beating against the blank wall of separation and more a total and complete withdrawal from God into a hollow space of nothingness.
How challenging to believe this unyielding barricade could be a part of our personal growth. Yet, there are numerous ways in which the darkest moments of our spiritual lives teach us and guide us to new vision and deeper living. We must keep open in our darkness because we may well learn something about our relationship with the Holy One, as author Ann Keiffer confirms:
I hauled my depression from sanctuary to sanctuary but found no sanctuary.
I was a spiritual misfit and went away all the more depressed that I could not embrace these churches or feel embraced by them. Maybe I’d come to a bad time, and God wasn’t in right then. Actually, God was in. In the place I hadn’t looked yet: in the depths of depression.

Poem ~ Free Spirit
Do we ever truly lose anyone?
We were born from stars and matter,
We were birthed as spirits and souls
So perhaps we never really lose anyone
Because they were never our belongings to forever keep
We hold so tightly to this body
But this body is designed to fade
Choose instead to cherish a soul
A free spirit to love eternally
For true love never ends
It continues as the sailing stars our galaxy so adores
Combusting in a celestial light show inspired by divine shores
Taking new breath, fresh life, a revival of purpose once again
If you put love in a cage,
Love cannot fly... She cannot ascend
The body and mind are bound, but your Spirit is free.

God, what would you have me say
and do today?
Laugh. Speak in light tones.
Do not be so serious. Not today.
Play with me. What game? Hide and seek.
Find me in all my hidden places.
Seek me everywhere; see me hiding in plain sight.
And laugh with me.
Today, life is fun, and so are you.
Breathe deeply and easily. Let heaviness go.
Today, let the lightness of your being shine
with joy for all to see.
Amen
