FAMILY FUN MESSAGE OF THE WEEK FROM BRENDA PIELLE
Dear Friends:
We have recognized “Pink Shirt Day” this week and what an important day it is! This day provides us with a time to think about how we can put an end to bullying and promote kindness. Let’s extend this for more than the one day, and encourage our children and youth to be kind to others, and to be vocal about bullying. Too often children do not tell anyone that they are experiencing bullying, themselves, or that they have witnessed someone else being bullied. Both situations need adult support and intervention so it is important that we teach our children to let us know about these events.
“Pink Shirt Day” began in Nova Scotia in 2007. You might enjoy reading about the history and about resources for bullying on the website www.pinkshirtday.ca
One way we can help our children to develop positive friendships is to foster and nurture their own self esteem. The songs and stories this week have this kind of a message – that we are all different and that we are all special. In the pre-recorded videos you might want to go back to the Family Fun one dated July 28th where you will find a book read that is called, Have You Filled Your Bucket Today. This story gives a nice way of explaining bullying and how we can promote kindness.
This week the parent-tot sing along video has the following songs: “From My Head Down to My Toes God Made Me”; “The Wheels on the Bus”; “I See the Moon and the Moon Sees Me”; and “Jesus Loves Me”. The story book is one called, What I Like About Me. On the Family Fun video you will find these songs, “The Corner Master Store (My Eyes Are Dim I Cannot See”; “You Are My Sunshine” (played on Mandolin); “You’ve Got a Friend”; “Kum By Ya” – the fast version. The book is one from “The Best Me I Can Be” series and is called, I Accept You As You Are. I have also included one story from a book that holds a collection of stories about animals that have formed friendships even though in the natural world they would not be, as some might be prey or predator for the other. The book is called, Unlikely Friendships, and I will be reading one story from it on the next few videos.
I hope these songs and stories provide you with some time to spend as a family singing along, listening, and capturing some quality time together: www.powellriverunitedchurch.org/family-fun
Sincerely,
Brenda Pielle
