MAJOR CLEANER NEEDED
The earth was filled with violence because of human beings! Nothing has changed. We continue to live in a world where humans daily inflict violent acts on creation. Countries at war, economic greed, political structures enamoured of power, individuals indifferent to the cries of the earth: our daily news provides a steady diet. Unlike the time when this Genesis text was written, we turn against our very source of life in many ways.
As hard as it may be, we can ask the Spirit to be with and guide us as we look honestly at our own place in creation. It is always easier to blame others than to take what small steps we can.
In Genesis 6, God plans a major cleaning of the earth to rid it of its violence. Yet God recognizes the good worth preserving and carefully safeguarding all the elements necessary for a re-creation. Walking with the Spirit, we will have all that we need to bring about peace and well-being to creation.
It seems to me we can start with a non-violent approach to ourselves and creation. Only then will the Spirit of health and creativity be liberated to work in the world around us.
